Nothing Too Hard
A commission. When God makes us a promise, we can be confident He will deliver, impossible though it may seem. The Bible is full of notable examples of this, and every day our real lives are full of less obvious but no less significant instances. Difficult and painful though our present circumstances may be, we can look to God with the hope that He will keep all his promises and fix all things that are broken; even us.
The commissioner for this piece chose the scripture, character, and pose. For those unfamiliar, this creature is known as a sergal, which is a fictitious alien species resembling something like a cross between a shark and a rabbit or kangaroo. The choice in species doesn't have anything, in particular, to do with the chosen scripture; simply a stylistic choice.
If you'd like an illustration featuring a scripture or inspirational quote of your choice, check out my commissions page for more info: sourpeppers.com/p/commissions.html

News » Updated Update Schedule
Man, I can't tell you how good it feels to be working on the main story again! I've really missed it, and I'm glad to be getting back into updating it more-or-less consistently. In order to better stay on top of not only the comic but my other real-life responsibilities, however, there will be some changes to how comic updates are released. I wanted to make sure all readers--especially long-time readers--are aware of these changes:
First, you may have noticed that the past few pages have been released in sections instead of the entire page at once. This pattern will continue moving forward, though it will largely depend on how well the story is served by an update of a particular size. Sometimes it will make sense for a page to be split into two equal halves, and release the first half one week, and then the second half the following. Sometimes it will make sense to divide the page differently; say, into 1/4 and 3/4 sections, or 1/3 and 2/3 sections, etc. Or, occasionally it may not make sense to divide the page at all, and on those weeks you'll get the full page. The main takeaway is, I'll be focusing on story updates rather than page updates. So if a page is divided into two parts, each of those parts will stand on their own as a single comic update (no cutting off in the middle of someone's sentence, for example). When it comes time to put them together into a digital or physical book, however, all the pieces will be put back together into full pages.
Second, in order to not burn out, I'm going to put a limit on how many hours per week I work on comics. As long as I'm able to finish each page in the time I've allotted, comic updates will continue to happen regularly. However, if there's a string of pages that all take longer than usual to complete, there may occasionally be weeks where a comic update doesn't occur. When that happens, I'll usually share a quick sketch or mini-comic to fill the gap.
Third, to further help with my workload, I'll be releasing "mini-stories" in between each main chapter. While a typical chapter usually contains between 10-20 individual updates, these mini-stories will only be between 4-6 updates or so. They might just be black and white and/or use a simpler art style. They might feature the main cast, or it might be a short story about me and Maiara. Or that space might even be filled with guest comics. (Speaking of, if you're ever interested in submitting a guest comic, even if no official guest comic event has been announced, feel free to reach out to me about it.)
Finally, while Books 1 and 2 are still available to preorder, there probably won't be a physical Book 3 for a while. As awesome as it is to see the books in physical form, they take a lot of work to put together. So, unfortunately, further physical books will be put on hold. There still may be digital versions made available, however, as well as other physical merchandise that's easier to put together. And as readership increases and another physical book becomes more viable, I'll definitely revisit the option.
All of these represent a decrease in overall output from me. However, those who've been following the website for the past year or so will probably note that output has already been lower than usual due to circumstances outside my control. It's my hope that by deliberately scaling back, I'll be better able to roll with the punches life deals me and keep story updates more or less consistent.
That said, you have the ability to help the main story update more frequently. The more financial support Aww, Feathers! receives, the more time I'll be able to dedicate to creating new story updates. That can take the form of subscribing to Aww, Feathers! on Patreon, leaving a one-time donation, or making a purchase at the Aww, Feathers! Store. And if you're unable to contribute financially at this time, simply sharing the webcomic with friends and family is a great way to help that doesn't cost a nickel!
Thank you all! I hope you enjoy the autumn weather, as well as the resuming story!

Dilawar Sweater Meme
Dilawar, pulling off that weird sweater thing... actually pretty well! Looks like it was made for him! 😆 Dil's not technically my fursona, but he's my only OC for which wearing only this sweater (as the meme directs) wouldn't have been be inapropro, lol! 😅
Curious about Dilawar, the blue-banded pancock? Learn more about him and his story on the webcomic Aww, Feathers! In fact, here's a chapter about him: www.awwfeathers.com/comics/208… (Never mind the grumpy dalmatian on the first couple pages of the chapter. Dil shows up pretty quick!)

News » What I've been up to...
Clear back in May I let you all know I was leaving my job as a software developer to give self-employment a try. I gave you a bit of a status report last month. Consider this a follow up.
<i>Big Plans: Aww, Feathers! Book 2</i> is in its final review stages. Just making sure every i, t, p, q, and all the letters in between are dotted, crossed, and minded! As before, you can reserve your copy of Book 1 or Book 2 (or both!) by heading over to AwwFeathersBook.com!
Over the past couple of months, I've been looking into some freelance programming work. I have very strong programming skills, particularly in front-end game and app development. I created JayLarkStudios.com as a sort of blog/digital portfolio to showcase some of the work I've done, both in programming and digital art. I've also created a profile on upwork and been submitting proposals to all the jobs I can find that match my skills and that I think I'd be a good fit for. Unfortunately, attracting clients has been difficult. I don't know if I'm just not very good at marketing myself, or if it's just not feasible for me to work as a freelancer right now. But if possible, I would really like it to work out. A successful freelance business would give me the flexibility to scale up the amount of time I dedicate to <i>Aww, Feathers!</i> as it becomes more profitable; something that's harder to do with a full-time job I've found (not for lack of trying!)
We can last a little longer before we need to shelve the whole self-employment idea for the time being. There's something you, my wonderful readers, may be able to do to help though. Something I've never asked of you before but thinking about it now, I kinda wish I had. Ah well, hindsight and all that. Anyway, it's simply this: if you or anyone you know are in the market for a freelance programmer or game/app developer, please give me your consideration! I've set up the following URLs for convenience:
<ul><li><a href="https://ift.tt/2Elx2rT> - My upwork profile contains a comprehensive list of my skills and qualifications as a software developer.</li>
<li><a href="https://ift.tt/2RXPTMu> - If a traditional resume is more your style, you can see mine, online and up-to-date, here.</li>
<li><a href="https://ift.tt/2EoNxn4> - This page contains links to a wider range of the services I offer, including programming and art related jobs.</li></ul>
If you would share any of the above links with anyone you know of who's looking for a skilled programmer, I'd be most appreciative!
Oh, and one final thing. I haven't been sitting on my hands while waiting for clients to roll in. In order to demonstrate to potential clients that I have the skills they're looking for, I've been working on a simple mobile game! It's nearing completion. I'm just ironing out a few more details. I'll definitely share more with you as it nears release time. So stay tuned!
Thanks all. Be well, and I'll do my best to do the same!

Study in your Mind
At first glance, the idea that we must study for ourselves to receive wisdom may seem at odds with the principle of trusting in God to grant us the answers we seek. However, throughout the scriptures, we find reminders that we need to also put in the effort of finding what it is we're looking for. We must "prove all things" (1 Thessalonians 5:21), we must ask, seek, and knock (Matthew 7:7), we must "meditate... day and night" (Joshua 1:8). God has given us the ability to think, to study, and to reason. He expects us to exercise those abilities and to increase them through careful and deliberate use. That's not to say we need to be scholars in order to receive revelation from God. But we should make use of whatever faculties and resources are available to us, given our own unique situation and circumstance.
Of course, if we rely solely on our own faculties to find the answers we seek, we will either fail, or we will lack the surety of the truthfulness of the answers we receive. Which is why we must pray to God to ask Him if what we have found is correct. These two pieces--study and prayer--are crucial and synergistic. If we neglect either one, we may not find what we seek. However, when we do both, our ability to find answers will be increased in a virtuous cycle: our prayers will be more purposeful and focused, and we will be blessed with confidence and direction in our studies.
This is the fourth in a series of Sour Peppers on personal revelation.

Now offering GAME commissions!
Hey guys! I'm offering a brand new type of commission: it's a GAME commission! I'll create a short mini-game according to your specifications. I can build it for web, desktop, or Android. Check out the link below for an example. (It does take about 15 seconds to load on my computer, so be patient!)
https://ine-platform-demo.netlify.com/
I'd like to make at least a few of these to use as examples in my portfolio to show future clients what I can do. So for a VERY limited time, I'm offering them for much cheaper than I would normally charge for this kind of project. The first person to claim one will get their custom game made for only $50! That's for a game of similar scope and complexity to the example below, so if you'd like something more complex, the price will go up accordingly. Also note that these game commissions are for personal use and entertainment only, and not for commercial use. If you want me to make a game that you intend to make money off of, talk to me about the specifics and we'll work something out.
If you're interested, contact me at josh@jaylarkstudios.com!

Givette in Training
Part of a trade I did with Scarbo the Black Sheep. I requested that he create an 8-bit version of one of my favorite Classical pieces, Danse Macabre, and in exchange I'd do a couple art pieces for him. He did a great job on the song by the way! You can listen to it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKJJ-q…
Anyway, here's the first part of my end of the trade: his new character, Givette, a white otter gal who's into martial arts! Huah! I'm still figuring out how to draw muscular characters well. I think this one turned out better than some of my other attempts though, which I'm happy for. Oh, and I also had fun doing that training dummy in the background. 😆

News » September Updates
Hey all. Whew, boy!
These past few months have certainly been a trip! We've funded the second <i>Aww, Feathers!</i> book, which is currently in the proofing stage (and still available for preorder at <a href="https://ift.tt/2NfqHBH). I also attended Anthro Weekend Utah (AWU) which was amaze-beans! As fun as it's been though, preparing and running both my book campaign and dealer's table for AWU took a lot more out of me than I was expecting. I've been feeling rather drained lately. Excited for what the future will bring, to be sure. But a little low on energy.
On top of that, as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm currently not working full-time. I'm pleased with the success of the book campaign and convention. However, it doesn't provide enough to take care of myself and my family. I'm grateful that I was able to take a few months to focus so much time and energy on my book and webcomic. But now I need to shift focus for a while. Providing for my family needs to be my top priority. That doesn't mean this comic is going away! Just that I'll be taking a break. And if you've been following along for a while, you know by now that when I take "breaks" from the comic, I still leave you all with a little something to at least keep you entertained.
So here's my plan. The current chapter will be placed on hold for a while. During the month of September, there will be a mini autobio chapter that I think you'll find amusing. It'll update on Tuesdays, just like before. During that time I'll be shipping out everyone's book orders, and also focusing on getting a stable source of income that will take care of our needs while also allowing me some time to work on projects that are important to me, including <i>Aww, Feathers!</i> Depending on how that goes, come October I may be ready to finish the current chapter and continue with the main storyline, or there may need to be another intermediate mini chapter while I search further. As always though, I'll keep you all informed.
There are those who have asked, "How are you doing?" and "How can I help?" First of all, thank you so much for caring about my family and me! We're doing okay for now. We're not in dire straits just yet. The reason I'm buckling down down now is to prevent us from getting to that point in the first place. As for how you can help, first off just keep sticking around. It may not seem like much, but the fact that people keep reading and commenting and sharing means a lot to me. If you'd like to support the comic financially, you can do so by <a href="https://ift.tt/2LOITgr on Patreon</a> to unlock bonus content, checking out the <a href="https://ift.tt/2Na5xVl, Feathers! Store</a> for books, prints, original artwork, and other merch, or even leaving a <a href="https://ift.tt/2NHiVx5 donation through ko-fi</a>. I am also <a href="https://ift.tt/2N42vSD for commissions</a> during this time, but be aware that they'll be pricier than normal right now in order to justify taking time away from my job search. If you're willing to pay it though, I'm happy to take it on.
Thanks again for all your support and your patience! I know it seems like I've been taking a lot of breaks over this past year. I take that as a sign that I, and this comic, are growing. And sometimes growing means re-calibrating in order to make sure things continue to run smoothly. So thank you, and stay tuned!

Boy Serval
Hehe, I think this is the first human (or mostly human) character I've drawn to completion in quite a long time! I was asked to draw a boy version of Serval, from the show Kemono Friends, which must admit I'd never heard of before. It looks fun though, and I had fun drawing this one!

Cry Day and Night
This question follows the Lord's parable of the unjust judge, who agreed to avenge a widow of her adversary, not because he cared about her or her well being, but rather because she kept asking for his help and he didn't want her bothering him anymore. The implication being, if the unjust judge would help the widow because of her persistence, how much more will God, who loves us, grant our righteous desires if we will be patient and persist in prayer unto him and if it be His will.
While this verse can apply to any righteous desire that we have, it is of particular importance when seeking knowledge in the form of personal revelation. We may not receive our answers right away. That's okay. Sometimes (often in fact) we will need to be patient. But while we are waiting to receive our answer, we should continue in earnest prayer, which will demonstrate to our Heavenly Father that the knowledge we seek is important to us, and that we trust that He is able to provide it unto us.
This is the second in a series of Sour Peppers on personal revelation.

Ask in Faith
Somewhat less well-known than the verse immediately preceding it, James 1:6 reminds us that when we ask God for wisdom, we must ask in faith. Remember that faith is a principle of action. In other words, to receive wisdom from God, we must be willing to act on the wisdom we receive. To do otherwise would be like asking an expert navigator for a map to get us through waters we've never traveled before, and then throwing the map away, instead allowing the ever changing winds and currents to take us wherever they will. God is not likely to answer a question asked out of mere curiosity, or motivated only by a desire to confirm what we already believe. But when we humble ourselves enough to acknowledge that He knows the correct path better than we do, and when we are willing to accept whatever answer He gives us (even if the answer is unexpected or unwanted), we may pray for wisdom, confident that the answer we receive will be His will.

Ask of God
This is the first in a series of Sour Peppers I intend to do on personal revelation. That is, receiving guidance from God. We start with what is probably the most well known passage of scripture on the subject among Latter Day Saints: the passage from the Bible that inspired Joseph Smith to ask God which of all the churches of his day was right, and which he should join. Joseph had pondered this question for a long time before receiving his answer. He wanted to do the right thing, but in spite of all his best efforts, his studies, and seeking guidance from local ecclesiastical leaders, was unable to come to a decision on his own (see Joseph Smith History 1:5-12). During his studies however, he came across this verse, which teaches us several important things about obtaining answers from God:
- If we lack wisdom (that is, if we don't know the answer to an important question or problem) we can ask God.
- God gives wisdom to all, liberally (in great abundance).
- God does not upbraid, meaning He does not punish us for asking Him sincere questions.
- Those who ask for wisdom will receive it. We may need to be patient, but answers will come.
Joseph received his answer, and we can too. If there is a problem in your life, and worldly wisdom has failed to bring you a satisfactory solution, try going to the Source of all truth: our Heavenly Father, Himself.

New home!
Welcome to Jay Lark Studios! I'm still getting this site all set up, but this will be the new home for news about projects I'm working on, as well as information regarding hiring me for programming or digital art consulting. If you'd like to contact me about anything, send me an email at josh@jaylarkstudios.com.
This site will also be taking the place of scalefledged.com and larpinglizards.com. Both sites will redirect you here. If you'd like to see any of the old news posts about projects I was working on in the past, you can see them at scalefledgedgames.blogspot.com. As for whether I plan to return to work on any of those projects, I might. It's been a while since then, and I've made significant progress on other projects that are still in the works. But after finishing those, I may revisit older ones in the future.
And speaking of projects I'm currently working on, stay tuned! Watch this space for updates.

As Precious in His Sight
In the middle of Jacob's sermon to his people, he rebuked them for their pride in thinking themselves better than those who were poorer or otherwise less fortunate than they. In the middle of his stinging words we encounter this phrase, which serves as a chastisement to the wicked, but also a comfort to those who may feel forgotten or cast out. Society may look at some with a critical eye; those who are not beautiful, rich, educated, or simply normal enough. But remember that God loves all His children equally. Every one of His children is precious to Him. We ought to remember the Golden Rule and treat them as such: the way we would want to be treated, and the way we know God would treat us.
This is my second Sour Peppers commission. If you would like a scripture or other inspirational quote illustrated similar to the one above, check out my commissions page.

Skye Con Badge
My first ever con badge commission! Thanks so much to Skye for trusting me with this. I'm very happy with it! You can see what the physical badge looks like here: sta.sh/099sq0pr5pc
I'd definitely be interested in doing more badge commissions! A full body one like this will be around $30, plus extra for supplies and shipping if you want it turned into a physical badge and sent to you. If you plan on attending Anthro Weekend Utah this year though, you can pick up your badge from my vendor table to save on shipping! Comment or message me for details if you're interested. I am finishing up my book campaign at the moment, so I won't be able to start working on any new commissions right away. But you can reserve yourself a spot for when I am available again.
Speaking of my book, the last day of the campaign is this Saturday, and we're currently just one physical book order away from our stretch goal! You could help us close that gap right now! Visit AwwFeathersBook.com to support the book!

Title of Liberty
Thousands of years ago, a man wrote these words on a cloth that he affixed to a pole. It has since come to be known as the "Title of Liberty." There were those in the land who sought to take their freedom away. There were also those who should have been allies to the cause of freedom, but who refused to defend their country, hoping to benefit from the political turmoil that would result if their enemies succeeded in overthrowing the government. Moroni--the man who erected the Title of Liberty--reminded his countryman of the things they held dear; things that were worth protecting and fighting for. Things far to dear to be given away, let alone for something so cheap as spite or the chance to gain power.
There are influences in the world today that threaten to take away our own liberties. We mustn't be fooled into thinking those influences come from only one person, political party, country, etc. It is often tempting to trade principles of liberty, fairness, compassion, and loyalty for personal or political gain. But remember the things our ancestors fought for, and remember that they still need defending.
Happy Independence Day! It may be an "American-centric" holiday, but independence from any influence that would seek to limit our liberty is worth striving for and celebrating, no matter where one may live.

You Are Loved
I love my LGBT+ friends and family. We don't always see eye to eye; we have some differences of opinion regarding the politics and morality of LGBT+ issues. But I admire everyone who is doing the best they know how to do what's right, even when that leads them to believe and act differently than me. I also believe that God is merciful, and will take each person's sincere desires to do good into account. I love you and I know that God loves you.
This is the first time I've shown Ine here in the Sour Peppers style. I've mentioned here before that the feathered lizard character represents me. But he's also a character in my webcomic. I originally created the version below, styled after the comic, as a telegram sticker. (For those unfamiliar, when a character is missing eyes or face, etc. it means they can be used to represent anyone, rather than a specific person.)
If you'd like, you can add the sticker pack that includes this sticker by clicking here. However, drumming up extra traffic for my webcomic wasn't my intention. I didn't want to inadvertently take advantage of Pride Month for my own benefit. Which is why I shared this with some of my friends only at first, and am now sharing it publicly in July. I don't know if that's just me thinking too hard or worrying too much, but there you have it. I wanted to do something to show my love for those who are LGBT+, regardless of any difference in lifestyle, belief, etc. Obviously I hope my words and actions in real life and online are more than adequate to communicate my love. Still, I hope this token shows that I do care.
